I have had good experiences with counseling off and on in my life, but coaching is much different and in many ways much more constructive. Coaching focuses more on the future, while counseling tends to focus more on the past. Coaching is less about going to a therapist and talking about sources of hurt and pain and more like having a coach at the gym to keep you focused and motivated on your goals for improvement. Maria has helped me to identify the things in my life that make me happy—the dreams for which I might not otherwise reach—and to develop a plan for making those things a bigger part of my life. More important, she helps me clear away the things I perceive as “obstacles” that are really just my own fears getting in the way. She challenges me to make progress in some concrete way between the times we talk. The other thing I like is that we can work over the phone, so it takes less effort to work a coaching call into my schedule.
